Health and Physical Education

Students in Niagara Catholic schools begin taking health and physical education in Grade 1.
At that time, students focus on ways to support their mental health and well-being and how to live healthy, active lives. It builds on what they learned in kindergarten – self-regulation and belonging and contributing.

Students grow in mind and body from Grades 1-3, learning in the classroom, gym, schoolyard, and in the community. The focus of learning is on social emotional learning, active living, healthy living, and movement.

In Grades 4-6, students build on what they learned in the primary division. Students focus on understanding themselves in relation to others, their physical and emotional development, how their actions affect others, and a sense of self.

Students in Grades 7 and 8 focus on their changing lives and bodies, making responsible decisions about their physical and mental health, and the consequences of the decisions they make on their own lives and the lives of others.

As they head into adolescence, students learn about establishing healthy, active living and social and emotional awareness.
